Abstract

Objectives: This study investigated methods of treating adolescents¡¯ school maladjustment problems through family intervention.
Methods: The researchers used constant comparative analysis and open coding to analyze multiple cases.
Results: The researchers identified several types of school maladjustment on the part of adolescents: school refusal, smoking and drinking, problematic peer relations, low morale, being late in returning home, and running away from home. Parents coped by not taking their children¡¯s sides, blaming their children, using abusive language and violence, preaching, and mistrusting their children. Therapists intervened by reinforcing insight (through probing the families), reflecting on attempted interactional methods, and suggesting new interactional methods. Changes in the families included new cognitions about the ineffectiveness of attempted interactional methods, shifts in functional interactional methods, and children making adjustments to school.
Conclusions: The researchers concluded that family members¡¯ functional interactions are very important for adolescents with school maladjustment problems.
